Design and construction of a new build, BREEAM Very Good, eleven classroom, two stream primary school and nursery.
The works included all furnishings and equipment, site development and servicing, substructure, superstructure, internal finishes, fitments, furnishes and equipment, services and associated external works including MUGA, sports pitch with flood lighting, and car parking facilities.
The materials used included a simple palette of white render, rainscreen and curtain walling.
The new school is respectful of the surrounding residential neighbours, constructed as a single-storey building for the teaching accommodation wings. The roof scape of the larger volumes of assembly hall and expressive arts area have been minimised to maintain the site lines to the Pentlands wherever possible.
The project also includes the demolition of the existing school building following the decant to the new build facility.
The site, which was surrounded by residential properties, was occupied by the existing primary school which remained operational throughout. The development was phased to construct the new school, with the demolition of the existing building being the final phase. In order to reduce the traffic flow, we made use of off-site storage and parking. Once the site was ready, vehicles were guided through the residential area by a banksman and escort vehicle.
We performed a number of interactive construction site safety talks. Talks were given to every pupil in Roslin Primary School from Nursery to P7. Following on from this a poster competition was held. One pupil from each year group was selected to have their poster printed onto the site hoarding.
