Construction of a new 12-storey critical care building comprising of 2 basement levels for services and 10 levels above ground.
Facilities include 4 operating theatres, 32 critical care wards including 8 isolation suites, 48-bed maternity ward and individual ensuite facilities, 2 radiology x-ray rooms, a 16,146sqft A&E department, as well as staff facilities.
Our Civil Engineering department performed the basement enabling works.
The site was surrounded by multi-storey specialist units, including Ears, Eyes, Nose and Throat (EENT), Outpatients Department, Maternity Department and the Critical Care and Theatre Building. These all remained operational throughout the works.
Maintaining clinical cleanliness and prevention control was crucial. The spread of Pseudomonas and Legionella was of particular concern. All commissioning and testing of plant was conducted in conjunction with the Health Trust’s guidelines. Cleanliness on-site was also critical, partitions were erected to seal off work areas from the live hospital, and all personnel entering were required to wear shoe covers and paper overalls to minimise contamination.
“There has definitely been a willingness to listen to our needs and what we’re trying to achieve.”Dennis Brownlee, Health Estates Investment Group.
The site undertook various activities, led by our CCS Ambassador, to impact positively on the area and the surrounding community. Activities included occupational health checks for staff on-site, the donation of Christmas toys to children in the EENT ward, and site visits for HNC Construction students from the Northern Regional College and A-level pupils from Bangor Academy. As well as, charity fundraising including £1,100 raised on-site for the Children’s Hospital and participation in a Breast Cancer awareness ‘Pink Day’.
