Providing flood protection to 800 residential and 200 business properties close to the River Ness
The level of flood protection will be up to 1 in a 100-year return event.
The flood alleviation scheme comprises 3km of in-situ reinforced concrete flood defence walls along both banks from Ness Bridge in the city centre to the river mouth by the harbour.
Developed for The Highland Council, the scheme provides flood protection while redeveloping the riverside area to be more attractive and accessible.
Active travel has also been promoted with the provision of high-quality streetscaping, wider riverside walkways and shared surfaces and a reduction in on-street parking.
The wall’s finishes and appearance were matched to those of phase 1, which was nearing completion at project commencement and was delivered under a separate contract.
