
Allowing commercial shipping through Mode Wheel on the Manchester Ship Canal
Consisting of a pair of two lock gates to allow vessels to move upstream and three sluice gates that control the water level in the canal system, which is also fed by the River Irwell which discharges into the canal upstream.
The North of England experienced exceptional rainfall, and Storm Eva brought high winds and heavy rain, further saturating the ground. As a result, the Manchester Ship Canal suffered bank failure damage downstream of the Mode Wheel Locks.
Reconstruction of 200m of collapsed quay wall on the upper reaches of the Manchester Ship Canal, Salford.
The project involved the installation of 200m of tubular combi-wall piles to stabilise the canal bank.
Repair works also involved site clearance and stabilisation of partially collapsed elements, as well as the utilisation of combi-piled walls, ground anchors, and rock armour revetment.
