Heart of the City development breaks ground

Date Posted 31.03.22

Construction of the Heart of the City flagship hotel officially got underway with the milestone marked by a ground breaking ceremony.

We were joined by Councillor Mazher Iqbal of Sheffield City Council, as well as representatives from Queensberry, Turner & Townsend, and HLM Architects.

As part of the Heart of the City programme, the building will be positioned between Burgess Steet and Pinstone Street. Housing the hotel’s 154 bedrooms, the new building will complement and adjoin the carefully retained Victorian façade along Pinstone Street.

Renowned for its unparalleled service and style, the arrival of Radisson Blu is seen as a key driver in helping attract new business opportunities. Raising the city’s profile as a major destination for business and leisure.

Serving to enhance Sheffield’s social scene, an upmarket rooftop bar and terrace also affords striking views over the Peace Gardens.

We are currently undertaking the refurbishment of the Gaumont Building, including the façade, while retaining the structural frame.

We are also commencing the demolition of existing buildings on-site with the retention of a four-storey masonry Victorian façade. As well as the construction of a new steel-framed 156 bed Radisson Blu Hotel.

Once we have completed our works, the building will provide large-scale leisure space, along with retail units at ground level.

We are excited to celebrate work getting underway on the Radisson Blu hotel. The careful retention of the beautiful Pinstone Street façade is a truly impressive sight and we’re looking forward to seeing how it will connect into the new build. The Heart of the City programme is about creating the right environment for us to attract premium brands to Sheffield and Radisson Blu is a perfect example of this ambition becoming a reality.

We are delighted to mark the first official milestone at our Heart of the City project. Groundworks are now progressing well, ahead of the arrival of the steel frame and precast floors in the coming months.
