Hitting the headlines: The importance of collaboration in Advanced Manufacturing

Date Posted 10.02.26

The Advanced Manufacturing industry is going through a period of significant growth, with global businesses establishing regionalised bases and supply chains in order to protect against geopolitical uncertainty.

We’ve seen this boom firsthand at McLaughlin & Harvey, with recent large-scale projects including the £170 million expansion of Etex’s Bristol facility and the construction of a new engine disc manufacturing facility on behalf of Rolls-Royce.

However, Advanced Manufacturing projects often face significant challenges, such as tight build schedules and the need to find ways to incorporate complex technology installations at scale.

Indeed, there is no ‘one size fits all approach’ and projects of this nature do not follow a straightforward framework timeline.

For these reasons, it’s vital that manufacturers and construction specialists collaborate to overcome potential challenges and ensure that projects are delivered on-time, on-budget and on-brief.

Sharing our insights

Our Pre-construction director, Martin Smith, recently explored the topic at length in an analysis piece for The Manufacturer – a monthly title which provides industry news, insights, and best practices for manufacturing leaders. In the piece, Martin shares his insights into how strong relationships between partners can help deliver complex installations.

Martin discusses how workshops can help to identifythe best joined-up approach to delivery; outlines the importance of approaching each project with a bespoke scheduling plan; and sets out how challenging tried and tested assumptions can maximise efficiency.

“Advanced manufacturing is growing rapidly as more manufacturers seek to reap the benefits of enhanced efficiencies offered by new technologies,” comments Martin in the piece.

“Early collaboration with contractors, design teams, engineers, and the supply chain is essential for manufacturers aiming to integrate these technologies seamlessly into production lines without significant delays.”
