McLaughlin & Harvey design team completes CABE training

Date Posted 25.08.25

In recent weeks, 14 members of McLaughlin & Harvey’s design management and technical team have completed the CABE Certificate in Building Control.

The course provides designers with an improved understanding of legislation, enhanced ability to interpret regulatory requirements and greater awareness of different routes to compliance.

Delivered by registered building control approvers and inspectors, the course comprised seven days of in-person training, culminating in an assessment on the eighth day. We received a 100% pass rate, with several team members excelling to receive distinctions.

Compliance and competency

Our design managers now have a key role to play in our approach to compliance following the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022. As McLaughlin & Harvey acts as both the Principal Contractor and Principal Designer under the act, we are required to demonstrate our competency to take on these roles.

Whilst our whole team is familiar with the Approved Documents and Building Regulations, many have come from an architectural background and have not had the opportunity to complete a formal Building Regulations course. As such, we identified this training to help in demonstrating our organisational capability and competency, whilst also enhancing our knowledge and understanding.

Our design management and technical team benefited from an in-depth review of the key regulations, as well as the framework of legislation that lies behind them. Additionally, the course offered a review of Building Safety Act requirements and a comprehensive look at the new Building Control Regime.

“The course was extremely beneficial to the whole team, who engaged with the content and trainers at every stage and came away with an enhanced understanding of Building Regulations. It was not just a case of turning up each day and gaining a certificate; the course also facilitated a wealth of interesting and mutually beneficial discussions, taking a deep dive into the Building Safety Act and allowing us to better demonstrate our competency in complying with its requirements.”
