Redevelopment of an existing sports stadium for the Commonwealth Games
At the heart of the wider Perry Barr regeneration effort was Birmingham City Council’s plan to redevelop Alexander Stadium into a high-profile venue for diverse sporting, leisure and cultural events.
The revamped stadium is set to host a range of tenants, including the world-famous Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club and Birmingham City University. As the new home for the university’s sports and exercise students, it will bring an exciting new partnership and purpose to the stadium beyond athletics.
The Alexander Stadium is now an international-standard athletics venue in Perry Barr, just outside Birmingham city centre. The redevelopment makes the stadium the largest facility of its kind in the UK, giving Birmingham a golden opportunity to reaffirm its claim as the national home of athletics.
The redeveloped facility is a true legacy asset for the City and its residents. Key features include:
• World Athletics Class 1 Facility
• 18,000 seating capacity (up to 40,000 for major events)
• 400m nine-lane IAAF Category 1 competition track
• 400m six-lane warm-up track
• New western stand with redeveloped north and south stands
• Practice throwing field
• External lighting, streetscape and infrastructure
