With 150 years’ experience working in the healthcare sector, McLaughlin & Harvey is proud of the breadth and scope of the projects it has undertaken.
From the completion of our first project in 1875, a three-storey Hospital for Skin Diseases in Belfast (subsequently destroyed in the Blitz in 1941), to the building of an £84m Critical Care Facility and Helipad at King’s College Hospital, London, our team has a long history of delivering exceptional healthcare facilities.
Whilst we have worked in collaboration with the National Health Service (NHS) since its inception in 1948, many of our projects pre-date the NHS and include the Belfast Maternity Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital in Armagh where the original floor springs in the entrance hall are still fitted with brass cover plated inscribed “McLaughlin & Harvey.”

How do healthcare construction projects differ from commercial construction projects?
Our healthcare construction team is frequently faced with challenges which are not as prevalent in other commercial construction sectors.
In hospital construction projects, we’re often working within live hospital sites, often in close proximity to patients and visitors at some of the most vulnerable times in their lives. Our team is always sensitive to this and working practices are amended accordingly.
This could include ensuring that deliveries and site movements are minimised during busy visiting periods or minimising noise wherever possible.
How can healthcare construction specialists ensure minimal delays?
NHS trusts are facing increasing pressure regarding waiting lists. Our team must go over and above to ensure any delays in construction work don’t add to this pressure.
This agility and commitment is highlighted by the challenges faced on the £21.5m redevelopment of the 5th floor Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 3rd floor Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Chelsea and Westminster hospital, which completed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our healthcare construction experts were faced with unique challenges alongside increasing pressure to complete the construction to meet patient needs.
How do we ensure Health Building Notes (HBNs) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTMs) compliance?
Our healthcare construction experience means that our team is fully compliant with HB Ns and HTMs at every stage of a project, from design through to construction and handover.
We’re specialists in hospital construction and redevelopment and ensure that healthcare buildings meet layout, patient flow, infection control, privacy, and dignity needs while also remaining future proofed for changing clinical environments.
