McLaughlin & Harvey has been appointed as the main contractor to build a new linkspan for Stornoway Port at its newly constructed deep-water terminal, which we completed in 2024.
This is the first project delivery agreement for McLaughlin & Harvey through the SCAPE Utilities Works and Services Framework, designed to empower utility sector organisations to accelerate their civil engineering and construction programmes and projects.
Stornoway Deep Water Terminal can accommodate vessels longer than 1,000 feet (330m), offering cruise ship berthing and deep-water access for large cargo vessels unloading components for renewable energy and other key industry sectors.
As part of our previous works, a bankseat was installed to facilitate the installation of a floating linkspan in the future. The linkspan will be used for one-off cargo deliveries and for a regular daily freight service from Stornoway to Ullapool.
“We’re pleased to be continuing our strong working relationship with McLaughlin & Harvey through the delivery of our new linkspan at Stornoway Port. Following the successful completion of the Deep Water Terminal in 2024, this appointment reflects a shared understanding of the Port’s long-term ambitions and a proven ability to deliver complex marine infrastructure. We look forward to working closely together as this next phase of development gets underway.”
Alex Macleod, Chief Executive
Stornoway Port Authority
“We’re pleased to once again be back in Stornoway, building on the successful delivery of the Deep Water Terminal. We’re working collaboratively with the Client to support their expansion goals and bolster the infrastructure at this vital port.”
Kevin Bell, Senior Contracts Manager
McLaughlin & Harvey
“We’re delighted to have Stornoway Port use our Utilities Framework to continue its collaborative relationship with McLaughlin & Harvey for project delivery. This demonstrates both SCAPE and our delivery partners’ commitment to delivering solutions for projects across Scotland.”
Gary Meechan, Operations Director
SCAPE
McLaughlin & Harvey will manage the manufacture, design, fabrication, and installation of the linkspan. Site activity will begin in Mid-February and include concrete works and piling.
In addition to the linkspan works, McLaughlin & Harvey has been appointed as contractor for the marine site investigation works for the Deep Water South project through the SCAPE Utilities framework. This development represents the second phase of the port’s deep-water expansion, intended to bolster renewable energy infrastructure and ensure Stornoway remains one of Scotland’s most vital ports for the transition to green energy.
