McLaughlin & Harvey is a privately owned company with over 170 years of experience, specialising in construction and civil engineering. Founded in 1853 and now operating throughout the UK and Ireland, the company employs over 800 people and has office locations in Belfast, Glasgow, London, Birmingham and Bristol.

The company delivers construction, civil engineering and fit-out projects and provides facilities management services to various sectors including healthcare, education, defence, industrial, retail, sports venues, transport infrastructure, environmental, marine, commercial, residential and leisure.

Our History

1850

McLaughlin & Harvey meet

Henry McLaughlin and William Harvey meet while working on the new Court House on the Crumlin Road in Belfast.

1853

McLaughlin & Harvey is formed

Henry McLaughlin and William Harvey established a business as Builders and Contractors at York Street, Belfast in 1853.

1859

Coleraine Town Hall is handed over

In Coleraine, Henry McLaughlin’s hometown, the foundation stone for a new town hall was laid on 21st July 1857.

1875

First healthcare project completed

McLaughlin & Harvey completed works on the Hospital for Skin Diseases in Belfast.

1904

Guinness Storehouse is completed

The Storehouse at St James’s Gate Brewery, has been redeveloped as a tourist attraction and is one of the most popular attractions in Dublin.

1905

McLaughlin & Harvey establish London presence

An office is acquired in London and works are expanded throughout Great Britain.

1930s

The age of film

Extensive cinema works completed in locations across London, Liverpool, Brighton, Birmingham and Glasgow.

1965

Elstree Studio expansion

Three new stages, dressing room block, canteen block and a deep basement car park built at Elstree Studios. 12 years later the stages would be used to film scenes for Star Wars.

1980

Back to the Future

Completion of the DeLorean factory as part of a joint venture fast-track programme. The DeLorean has a cult like status for car enthusiasts and appeared in the Back to the Future movies.

McLaughlin & Harvey acquires Barr Holdings

2010

G1 George Square complete

Completion of the major redevelopment of the iconic Grade ‘A’ listed G1 George Square, Glasgow.

2012

Commonwealth Games success

Tollcross Aquatic Centre completed. The venue was used as part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

2013

Works at Gobbins Coastal Path begin

Reconstruction works begin at the iconic Gobbins Coastal Path. Following the original 1901 route, the iconic bridges, Tubular Bridge and Gordon’s Leap Suspension Bridge, have been reconstructed to match the originals, with the original steps carved into the rock and walkways retained.

2015

Phase 1 of Teesport Berth 1 works completed

Reconstruction of 800m of an existing suspended deck quay, constructed in the 1950s, over three phases within a live port environment for PD Ports.

2017

Omagh Hospital & Primary Care Complex completed

The first of its kind in the UK; bringing together a range of primary, secondary and community healthcare services.

Expansion works begin at Hendrick's Gin Distillery

An expansion within the grounds of one of Scotland’s most prestigious grain whisky distilleries, William Grant & Sons.

2018

Work at Liverpool Football Club’s AXA Training Centre begins

The state-of-the-art AXA Training Centre brings together the club’s First Team and Academy operations together for the first time.

2018

Works begin on Barclays’ new state-of-the-art campus in Glasgow

The flagship headquarters for Barclays, works included the construction of Building 1, Building 2, as well as associated infrastructure works and public realm.

2019

IKEA Greenwich, London store completed

IKEA’s first eco store and the first retail unit in the UK to achieve a BREEAM score of over 90%.

2019

McLaughlin & Harvey acquires Rocklyn

A specialist supplier of Air Domes, Fixed Fabric Structures & Padel Courts.

2020

Works begin on BT's new global headquarters

Construction of a new 18-storey office building completed in central London.

2020

New MINI steel pressing facility completed

The facility for BMW Group contains a new press that will produce steel panels for the MINI plant in Oxford at twice the rate of the old equipment which it replaces.

2021

WorkSpace division is launched

Expertise in construction, interior fit-out, commercial furniture services, specialist joinery, and facilities management.

2022

Alexander Stadium, Birmingham completed

This sporting venue was completed for Birmingham City Council and used in the 2022 Commonwealth Games for the athletics as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

2022

Works completed at Oxford University IDRM

A specialist, world-leading Institute of Development & Regenerative Medicine medical research building and ancillary plant / support building.

2023

Flood protection works at Stonehaven completed

2km of flood walls constructed to protect homes and businesses affected by flooding from the River Carron for Aberdeenshire Council.
