Woking Fire Station

Demolition of existing vacant buildings, including asbestos removal, and the design & build of a new 5-storey building comprising 6-bay fire station with Fire Training Tower along with 33 residential units on the top 2 floors.

Works were adjacent to a live railway and beside a number of residential and business premises which remained occupied throughout.

Construction comprised piled foundations, structural steel frame and a mixture of curtain walling, rainscreen cladding and brickwork to the facades. The building, including residential accommodation, was fully fitted-out to a high quality standard.

Feature of ProjectConstricted Site

Works were delivered beside an operational railway, whereby a ‘failsafe zone’ was provided alongside the rail line. No over-sailing was permitted in this zone to protect the rail line, and security of the railway boundary was maintained at all times. Early contact with Network Rail was made to discuss and agree proposals to ensure compliance. Works fulfilled Network Rail’s requirements and the continuity of the rail service was maintained.

Community EngagementConsiderate Constructor’s Scheme

The site undertook various activities, led by our CCS Ambassador, to impact positively on the area and the surrounding community. Activities included the donation of bird tables to the local Horsell Village School, food to the local Women’s Refuge Woking, as well as the promotion of the local economic growth by employing local subcontractors and labourers e.g. roofing, cladding, masonry, groundworks.
