Design and construction of a new 3-bay aircraft hangar on a brownfield site next to the existing Ryanair 2-bay hangar. Approximately 500 tonnes of structural steel formed 2 large span frameworks - the largest span having a clear opening of 80m. The building envelope comprised of composite roof and wall cladding. Specialist epoxy resin flooring was used to cover the majority of the 75,347sqft insitu concrete ground and first floors. The remaining toilets, offices and changing facilties were fitted out with vinyl flooring and painted blockwork walls. An elaborate design of bespoke metalwork bridges, platforms and staircases ensured that accessibility to aircrafts was optimised. The existing concrete apron was extended with approximately 1,347sqft of pavement quality concrete. Tarmac access roads and car parks, soft landscaping and airfield standard fencing were also installed. The sensitive nature of not only extending onto a live hangar but working within a tight security regime has been successfully achieved during the project.
