Refurbishment and extension of the 19th century former Castle Primary School. Works involved stripping back the old school’s interior to replace all walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows, as well as installing solar panels on the roof. The layout of the building was altered to incorporate nine classrooms, music and drama room, a nurture room and an infant activity room. The existing gym hall was demolished and replaced as an extension to the old school in line with the traditional design. A new-build nursery was also constructed next door, and was linked to the school via a covered walkway. The nursery incorporates three playrooms and a wrap-around suite all housed in a bright and modern building for its 70 children. Features of the new nursery include soft play, underfloor heating and an eco-garden. Outside, the expansive play area includes bike racks and a miniature road for the children to use to practice cycling proficiency. New parking and drop off areas were also created and a newly constructed flood-defence wall protects both the school and nursery.
