Cairnryan Berth 1 Linkspan Replacement

Design & build new linkspan and berth realignment to the existing Cairnryan Ferry Terminal.

New linkspan structure was constructed alongside the existing linkspan, which remained operational until completion and was installed over two 48 hour shutdown of the port.

The steel Linkspan was fabricated in Shanghai, China, in parallel to the site works progressing with the installation of the bank seat structure where the Linkspan would ultimately be located.

It was then transported to a specialist deep water site in Norway, on a large bulk vessel carrier, where four main parts were assembled onto a sinkable barge, for transportation to Cairnryan.

Works also included reclamation of land, rock armour revetments, installation of services, and completion of surfacing to the reclaimed area.

“The plan was to construct and install the Linkspan without disrupting the service and I’m pleased to report that is what we did. The berth realignment was completed within 48 hours, which was a huge challenge for staff. An enormous amount of planning from the contractors was required to manage the logistics. It involved round-the-clock shifts and there were more than 100 people working during the weekend of installation.”
