‘Business Backing Talent’ in Stonehaven

01.03.21

As part of this year’s Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2021 we reflect on this year’s theme of ‘Business Backing Talent’, and how at McLaughlin & Harvey we value what apprenticeships can bring to individuals, employer and the economy.

Local teenager Kayla left school at 16 after finding that the academic environment didn’t work for her. She successfully completed a placement for three months taking a real interest in working in construction and was then offered a modern apprenticeship.

In January 2020, Kayla started as a Site Administration Modern Apprentice at our Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme project. She has worked hard with the backing and support of the site team, and has already successfully completed her SCQF Level 6 Business & Administration qualification despite being furloughed for three months due to COVID-19.

Her role within the project is key to supporting many elements including, health and safety, quality, commercial and communications.

Kayla commented, “I’m so much more confident and have learnt so many new skills. Following the completion of my modern apprenticeship, I wish to pursue a career in construction administration. I have always aimed to work in health and safety, and my current role has enabled me to be involved in this with the rest of the team. I am a now a good communicator, team player and eager to learn new skills. I am enjoying my job and working with everyone and being part of the project and looking forward to the future with McLaughlin & Harvey.”

Sheila, McLaughlin & Harvey Community Liaison for Stonehaven Flood Protection Scheme, said, “I am delighted to have successfully recruited and mentored Kayla who has now successfully completed her SCQF Level 6 Business & Administration qualification despite being furloughed for three months. She has been a key player within the project. Well done Kayla, a real star in the making and her future looks very bright."
