Yesterday, six new trainees started their career with McLaughlin & Harvey.
Our trainee scheme is open to anyone that is looking to attend University, but also to practice their chosen subject in the workplace. Learning and earning in tandem.
This year we have taken on Quantity Surveying and Civil Engineering trainees. A typical working week for our trainees would consist of four days on-site, and one day at University. After five years they will graduate in their chosen field having gained five years’ worth of industry experience.
Last year, we took on nine trainees who have now entered their second year studying Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying and Construction Management.
Mark Boyle, one of last year’s trainees, told us about his first year in the industry. When asked about what he had learnt this year, he commented, “Before I started the trainee scheme, I expected my role to be placed purely around engineering. However, since then I have been given experience in a number of areas. I have worked in the planning department, as well as shadowing Site Managers; learning about the management roles within the company. It has opened my eyes to how many options there are within the industry and where my career could take me. One thing I didn’t expect before joining the construction industry was how helpful everyone was. Even subcontractors are willing to take time out of their day to show a trainee the ropes.”
We hope that our 2016 trainees have as successful and enjoyable year as Mark did last year!
