The new Design & Build Bilston Primary School in Midlothian has been successfully completed.
The single-story, 8 classroom primary school and nursery can accommodate up to 200 pupils. Other facilities include a multi-use games area, sports pitch with flood lighting, and car parking.
The new primary school has replaced the ageing Roslin Primary School annexe, which is currently being demolished. Each classroom in the new school has large panels of glazing opening out onto the surrounding playground to encourage outdoor learning. A pitched roof has also been installed and vertically dropped across a central atrium to allow the glazing to filter natural light into the learning space below.
The influx of new housing both north and south of Roslin, as well as south of Bilston, has left Midlothian Council stretched to find extra school places for local children. The newly enlarged school will go a long way to helping provide these places.
McLaughlin & Harvey has also recently been appointed as main contractor for the new Roslin Primary School just 1.6 miles away.
Barry Bryce, Operations Manager at McLaughlin & Harvey commented, “The state-of-the-art school is much bigger and better equipped than the annexe previously used by Roslin primary. The staff, pupils and local community have been so welcoming and supportive throughout the build, we are sorry to go, but hope that this new building leaves them with a learning space that will encourage bright futures.”
