Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) President Professor David Balmforth visited McLaughlin & Harvey’s Teesport Berth 1 reconstruction site in Middlesbrough to launch the national public awareness campaign ‘This is Civil Engineering’ in that region ahead of the General Election.
The ‘This is Civil Engineering’ campaign, launched by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), will see banners displayed on various infrastructure projects across the UK explaining to the public what civil engineering is, and making a clear link between the work taking place and its benefits to the community.
The initiative forms part of ICE’s wider ‘Commit to Infrastructure General Election’ campaign; and the leading engineering body is hoping it will serve as a reminder that long term investment in infrastructure improves quality of life for the public, regenerates communities, and creates jobs.
The Teesport berth reconstruction project will increase the port’s capacity for larger vessels. Phase one will be completed this month, with the second phase scheduled to be concluded at the end of 2015.
Professor Balmforth commented,
“Teesport is fantastic example of the value that first class infrastructure brings to this region. The North East needs to secure its fair share of infrastructure investment in the future if it is to realise its full potential as one of the major economic regions of the UK.”
The campaign was also launched on McLaughlin & Harvey’s Waterfront Exhibition and Conference Centre project.
