The first vessel, a 75,000 tonne Conti Spinell Bulk Carrier, has docked at PD Ports Teesport Berth 1, Middlesbrough following the recent completion of £19m phase 1 works.
These included the demolition and reconstruction of 305m of suspended deck quay to replace the original 1950s understrength structure. The berth has also been deepened to allow larger ships to dock, such as the 75,000 tonne Conti Spinell Bulk Carrier for which the old berth was unsuitable.
McLaughlin & Harvey has also been appointed to construct phase 2 of the berth reconstruction, extending it for a further 245m. This £13m phase is scheduled for completion in early 2016.
